Main article: Dead Man Walking (soundtrack) Reception Critical response ĭead Man Walking was well received by critics. The murdered boy's father attends the funeral ceremony although he is still filled with hate, he soon begins to pray with Sister Helen. Poncelet is executed by lethal injection and given a proper burial. As he is prepared for execution, he appeals to the boy's father for forgiveness and tells the girl's parents that he hopes his death brings them peace. Just before he is taken from his cell, Poncelet tearfully admits to Sister Helen that he had killed the boy and raped the girl, before Vitello killed her. Sister Helen tells Poncelet that his redemption is possible only if he takes responsibility for what he did. Poncelet asks Sister Helen to be his spiritual adviser through his execution, and she agrees. Sister Helen's application for commutation is refused. The victims' families do not understand Sister Helen's efforts to help Poncelet and claim that she is "taking his side". At the same time, she gets to know Poncelet's mother, Lucille, and the families of the two victims. After many visits, she establishes a relationship with him. Convincing an experienced attorney to take on Poncelet's case pro bono, Sister Helen tries to have his sentence commuted to life imprisonment. He protests his innocence and insists Vitello killed the two teenagers. Sister Helen decides to visit Poncelet, who is arrogant, sexist and racist, and does not even pretend to feel remorse. As his scheduled execution date approaches, Poncelet asks Sister Helen Prejean, with whom he has corresponded, to help him with a final appeal. His accomplice, Carl Vitello, was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Matthew Poncelet, a convict sentenced to death for the murder and rape of a teenage couple, has been on death row at the Louisiana State Penitentiary for six years. Sarandon's performance won her the Academy Award for Best Actress, while Robbins, Penn and Bruce Springsteen were nominated for Best Director, Best Actor and Best Original Song, respectively, for the single "Dead Man Walkin'". The film was a critical and commercial success it grossed $83 million on a budget of $11 million and received praise for the performances of Penn and Sarandon, as well as Robbins's direction. The use of an HMD resulted in a clearer and more abrupt speed reduction, more virtual presence, and a higher degree of simulation sickness. However, there were significant differences between the two display conditions. Results indicate that the experienced drivers showed very similar driving and risk behavior as the inexperienced drivers in both experimental conditions. Eighty experienced and less experienced drivers completed six simulation-based hazard perception scenarios, which were displayed either via a triple-monitor set-up or an HMD. Moreover, we studied the interplay between display mode, sense of presence and simulation sickness. The present experiment investigated whether this effect could be enhanced by an even more immersive presentation technique for driving simulation: a head-mounted display (HMD). Research on spatial presence in other contexts support this assumption. The wider field of view was assumed to cause the drivers to be more present in the virtual world, which in turn provoked more natural scanning of the road and therefore, earlier hazard detection in experienced drivers. ![]() In this context, prior research demonstrated that a wider field of view (three monitors compared to a single monitor) led to earlier speed adjustments in response to potential hazards -especially for experienced drivers. Although configurations and fidelity differ considerably between driving simulators, studies comparing the impact of their distinct features on driving performance and test validity remain rare. I have determined that the files mostly, if not all, things that were attached in Messages. I would just like to understand why that pesky imagent folder is so large - 21.5 GB - and how files end up in it. The usual culprits are google chrome caches, mobile back ups, steam games, etc. You should be able to find what’s taking up space. It will list all file folders by size in descending order. Still, it seems like I ought to be able to do more than that without constantly running out of space. Download Omni Disk Sweeper and install, give it full disk access in system prefs. Very little music (iTunes folder is 400 MB). The Documents folder (that houses all those exciting spreadsheets and my Quicken files) is 6.8GB. I don't often remove old messages, b/c I haven't found a straightforward way to easily clear out the detritus without also losing things I want to keep. Every few months, I clear out email and delete browser caches. OmniDiskSweeper is good at locating space-occupying files and also lets you know whether the file is an organizer or system file, so that you don’t delete anything critical. The application usually locates and deletes big files. That said, I lead a somewhat dull computing life. OmniDiskSweeper for Mac is a tool that helps clear space on your Mac by deleting unnecessary files. I don't doubt it, but it's what I could pay for, and so it's what I have. I've spent some time reading up on CleanMyMac and now feel that I should give my keyboard a bath. I can't think what I could possibly have done to create that many files that quickly. My iCloud usage is less than 5GB (I don't pay for any extra space) and it consists of Calendar, Contacts, Mail, and Messages. I have turned off iCloud and signed out of my account: no change. Admittedly, you're undoubtedly leaving files on the hard drive that you could delete without harm if you do this, but it's also the only advice I can give you that couldn't cause you to accidentally delete something important. Thanks for the reply, MrHoffman, though I'm still puzzled. Do not rely on restoring files from Time Machine delete only those files you never want to see again. The approach I generally recommend to folks who ask this question is that you're safest if you only delete files that you're sure you don't need any more. Delete with caution and do not delete any system files, for example files in /Library and /private. (As opposed to other applications, which will tell you "deleting this won't do any harm" - and then turn out to not be correct.) In general, we just try to steer away from tricking the user into thinking that we know more than we actually do. Knowing which files are used for which purposes is much, much harder - it would require knowledge about Mac OS X, about various applications, and information about the various modifications to the above that users could make. One of the reason why OmniDiskSweeper answers some questions (What files are taking up all the room on my hard drive?), while not answering others (What will happen if I delete this file from my hard drive?) is because we often don't know the answer to the latter question. A little more detail: when we designed OmniDiskSweeper, we wanted to make a tool that lets the user quickly find out where the space on their hard drive is going and then make decisions about what items they want to keep and which they want to delete to free up space. ![]() The developers further sweeten the deal with a complimentary mobile app for smartphones. If the bite is getting worse after 24 hours, call your doctor and take photos to record the changes. It’s normal for a bite or sting to swell and itch, which can last up to 48 hours, getting slightly better over time. What’s a sign a bug bite is something more serious?Īs long as the reaction stays localized-around the bite-it's usually not serious. Examples include an allergic reaction or infection that can be life-threatening. If you have a systemic reaction-symptoms beyond the site of the bite-your body is mounting a bigger immune response. But most of the time, any local reaction to a bug bite says you're functioning normally. What does a bug bite say about your immune system?Įveryone thinks their immune system is off when they see something they have not experienced before: a larger bump, a redder lump, an itchier itch, a stingier sting. If you scratch a bite, it becomes more inflamed, causing more itch, and you increase the potential for infection. Your immune system fights substances in the bug saliva with a variety of mediators, such as histamine, which causes swelling, inflammation, and itchiness. When bugs bite, they inject saliva, triggering your body to react. We asked Brooks to tell us everything we should know about bugs and their bites. Mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas cause the most bug bites-and carry diseases like West Nile and Lyme disease, which can be serious-so it’s worth trying to avoid bug bites as much as possible. Most bug bites do not cause problems and will resolve on their own, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to avoid them. “During the summer we provide insects more opportunity to bite," says pediatric allergist and immunologist Joel Brooks, MPH, DO, “and the number of reported cases of disease from mosquito, tick, and flea bites has more than tripled in recent years according to the CDC.” Others can leave you or your child with bacterial infections, parasites, or viruses. Most bug bites (usually from mosquitoes) stop itching after a day or two. Itching, stinging, and swelling really take the fun out of being outdoors and opening windows in the summer. |
